Mirror Placement as per Vastu: The Right Direction for Every Room

Few things change the feel of a room as quickly as a mirror. It brightens a dark corner, makes a small room look larger and gives a plain wall a focal point. In many Indian homes, the first question isn't which mirror to buy but where it should go. That is the question of mirror placement as per Vastu.

This guide covers the mirror direction as per Vastu for every room: the entrance, living room, dining area, bedroom and bathroom. It also explains what Vastu guides actually say about shapes, and the practical numbers that help any mirror look right on the wall, such as size and hanging height.

Quick answer: According to Vastu, the best walls for a mirror are the north and east walls. Most guides advise against the south and south-west walls. Don't place a mirror directly facing the main door, your bed or another mirror, and replace any mirror that is cracked or gives a distorted reflection.

The best direction for a mirror as per Vastu

Vastu Shastra treats mirrors as reflectors of energy, so where a mirror hangs matters as much as how it looks. Different Vastu guides give different details, but they broadly agree on the directions below.

Wall What most Vastu guides say
North One of the two best walls. Associated with wealth and new opportunities.
East One of the two best walls. Associated with morning light, health and positivity.
West Opinions differ. Some guides accept a round or square mirror here; others advise against it.
South Usually avoided. Some guides suggest covering a south-wall mirror when it isn't in use.
South-west Usually avoided. Linked in Vastu with stress and strain in relationships.

"On the north wall" or "facing north"? Read the rule carefully

This is the most common mix-up. When Vastu guides say a mirror belongs on the north wall, they mean the mirror hangs on that wall and faces south into the room. A mirror on the east wall faces west. So if a rule says "north and east walls", hang the mirror on those walls. Don't point it towards them.

How to find north in your home

Stand near the middle of the room with a compass app on your phone, away from metal almirahs, speakers and wiring, which can throw the reading off. Hold the phone flat and note which wall lies to the north. Mark it with a small piece of tape before you shop, so you know which walls you are choosing between.

Mirror at the entrance

The entrance rule appears in almost every Vastu guide: never hang a mirror directly facing the main door. The belief is that it pushes energy, and opportunity, straight back out. A mirror on a side wall of the foyer, ideally the north or east side, is considered the right way to use a Vastu mirror at the entrance.

A mirror above a console table is the classic foyer arrangement. It gives you a last look before you leave and a place for keys, a bowl of flowers or a diya. Two numbers make it look right:

  • Width: choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console.
  • Height: hang it with the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the console top, so the two read as one arrangement rather than two separate pieces.

The Wiggle Wall Mirror is 70 × 70 cm, with a wavy acacia wood frame around a round mirror. By the two-thirds rule, that suits a console of roughly 95–105 cm.

Mirror in the living room

For the mirror position as per Vastu in the living room, the guidance is the same as elsewhere: a north or east wall. What the mirror reflects matters just as much. Vastu guides favour a mirror that reflects light or a pleasant view and avoid one that reflects the main door.

That lines up with good design. A wall mirror for the living room placed across from a window bounces daylight deeper into the room. If your window is on the south wall, a mirror on the north wall does both jobs at once. Before you drill, hold the mirror up (or tape a sheet of newspaper the same size to the wall) and check what you will see from the sofa. Choose a window, plant or artwork over a cluttered corner or the television.

Above a sofa, keep the mirror to about two-thirds of the sofa's width, with the bottom edge 20–25 cm above the top of the sofa back. A large decorative mirror for the wall can then do the work of artwork. The Bean Wall Mirror is one of the largest in our range at 100 × 80 cm. Its organic bean shape is framed in acacia wood with a woven cane panel, so it has enough presence to anchor a three-seater sofa on its own.

Mirror in the dining room

This is the one room where Vastu actively encourages a reflection. A mirror that reflects the dining table is widely considered auspicious because it symbolically doubles the food on the table, and with it abundance for the household. Hang it on a north or east wall of the dining area, where it reflects the table and the people seated around it.

In practice, a dining mirror often sits above a sideboard, which gives you the same console-and-mirror proportions as the entrance. The Tokyo Wall Mirror (70 × 85 cm) sets a round, wood-framed mirror inside an off-centre ring of tightly wound rope. Its softness works well opposite the straight lines of a dining table and chairs.

Mirror in the bedroom

Mirror placement in the bedroom as per Vastu has one firm rule: a mirror should not face the bed. Vastu guides link a mirror that reflects you while you sleep with restlessness and disturbed sleep. If a mirror has to face the bed, for example on a wardrobe door, many families cover it at night or fit it inside the wardrobe door instead.

For the mirror position as per Vastu in the bedroom, choose a north or east wall, away from the bedroom door and out of the bed's line of sight. A mirror beside the wardrobe or in a dressing corner usually meets all three conditions.

For where the bed, wardrobe and dressing table belong, see our guide to bed direction as per Vastu.

Which direction should a dressing table mirror face?

Place the dressing table against the north or east wall, so the mirror hangs on that wall and you face north or east while you get ready. This is also the most practical spot if that wall gets daylight, because natural light from the side is the most accurate light for make-up and grooming.

Full-length and floor mirrors

A full length mirror or standing mirror follows the same rules: lean it against a north or east wall and keep it out of view of the bed. Size is simple optics. To see yourself from head to toe, a mirror only needs to be half your height, as long as it is positioned correctly. A 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) person needs 85 cm of mirror. A tall floor mirror gives everyone in the family a full view without careful positioning.

The Crater Floor Mirror stands 170 cm tall and 50 cm wide. Its organically shaped mango wood frame is sculpted with a textured, crater-like surface, so it doubles as a sculptural piece in the room.

Whichever you choose, secure a leaning floor mirror to the wall with an anti-tip strap or bracket, especially if you have children or pets.

Mirror in the bathroom

For the mirror direction in the bathroom as per Vastu, guides again recommend the north or east wall. Conveniently, that is often where the washbasin sits. Two rules to follow: don't hang the mirror directly opposite the toilet, and keep it clean and well lit.

Think about the material too. Wood and MDF frames are best kept away from shower splashes and steam, so they suit a powder room or a ventilated vanity area rather than the wet zone. The Ginkgo Wall Mirror (75 × 75 cm) has a square, scalloped mango wood frame with handpainted ginkgo leaves. Being square, it also suits families who follow Vastu's shape preferences strictly (more on shapes below).

Kitchen, study, staircase and locker

  • Kitchen: avoid a mirror that reflects the gas stove.
  • Study: keep mirrors out of view of a study table, especially in children's rooms. It is considered distracting, and most people find a reflection in the corner of their eye distracting anyway.
  • Staircase: some guides advise against mirrors near stairs.
  • Locker or cash box: a mirror that reflects the locker is traditionally believed to double wealth. Keep the reflection clear and undistorted.
  • Two mirrors facing each other: avoid this anywhere in the home. The endless reflection is considered unsettling.

Mirror shapes and frames: what Vastu guides actually say

This is where Vastu advice varies most, and it helps to know that before you shop. Many guides recommend square or rectangular mirrors as the most stable, grounded shapes. Others recommend round, oval and wave-shaped mirrors, or match specific shapes to specific directions. Some even advise against square ones.

The rules guides agree on are about direction, reflection and condition, not shape. A sensible approach:

  • If you follow Vastu strictly, choose a square or rectangular mirror for your main north or east wall.
  • If design matters more to you, a round mirror, wavy mirror or organic shape is fine where the placement rules are met.

For a rectangular option with more character than a plain frame, the Lyon Wall Mirror is 60 × 80 cm, with a crowned arch at the top and a slim black powder-coated steel frame. It is an easy way to add an arch mirror to a hallway or dressing area.

A quick mirror check before Diwali

Diwali cleaning is a good time to walk through the house with Vastu in mind:

  • Replace cracked or chipped mirrors. Vastu treats a broken mirror as a source of negative energy, and it is a safety hazard as well.
  • Clean the glass until the reflection is clear. Spray glass cleaner onto a microfibre cloth rather than onto the mirror, so it doesn't run onto wooden, cane or rope frames. Wipe wooden frames only with a soft, damp cloth. See our care instructions for each material.
  • Move any mirror that faces the main door or a bed.
  • Check fixings. A mirror should hang flat and secure against the wall, with wall plugs and screws suited to its weight.
  • Double the diya glow safely. A mirror behind a row of diyas multiplies their light, but keep open flames well away from wooden, cane and rope frames.

Mirror placement checklist

  1. Find north with a compass app and mark your north and east walls.
  2. Check what the mirror will reflect from where you usually sit or stand: light and views are good; the main door, your bed or another mirror are not.
  3. Measure the furniture below the mirror and aim for two-thirds to three-quarters of its width.
  4. Tape a paper template of the mirror to the wall and live with it for a day.
  5. Decide whether shape matters for your family's Vastu practice, then choose a frame.
  6. Plan the fixing, or an anti-tip strap for a floor mirror, before the mirror arrives.

Mirror Vastu FAQs

Which wall is best for a mirror as per Vastu?

The north and east walls. Vastu associates the north with wealth and opportunity, and the east with light and good health. Hang the mirror on one of these walls, which means it faces south or west into the room.

Can we place a mirror on the south wall?

Most Vastu guides advise against it, and the south-west even more so. If a south wall is your only option, some guides suggest keeping the mirror small and covering it when it isn't in use. Artwork is another option for that wall.

Can we put a mirror on the west wall?

Opinions differ. Some guides accept a round or square mirror on the west wall, while others list it among the directions to avoid. If you have a choice, the north or east wall is the safer option.

Should a mirror face the bed as per Vastu?

No. Vastu guides link a mirror facing the bed with disturbed sleep. Move it to a wall out of the bed's line of sight, or cover it at night if you can't.

Which direction should a dressing table mirror face?

Place the dressing table on the north or east wall, so you face north or east while getting ready. Keep it out of view of the bed.

Can a mirror face the main door?

No. This is one of the most consistent Vastu rules. Hang the entrance mirror on a side wall of the foyer instead, ideally on the north or east side.

Are round mirrors bad as per Vastu?

Not necessarily. Many guides prefer square or rectangular mirrors, but others recommend round and wave shapes for certain directions. If you follow Vastu strictly, choose a rectangular mirror for your main wall. Otherwise, focus on direction and reflection, which every guide agrees on.

How big should a full-length mirror be?

At least half your height, so 85 cm for a 170 cm person. A floor mirror of 160–170 cm lets everyone in the family see a full-length reflection without adjusting it.

Vastu is a traditional practice and its interpretations vary. For a reading of your own floor plan, consult a Vastu expert.
