A dining table is the one piece of furniture that has to fit your room, your family and your guests at the same time. Too small, and festive dinners end with people eating from their laps. Too big, and nobody can pull out a chair. Getting the dining table size right comes down to a few numbers: how much table each person needs, how much space to leave around it, and the right height for table and chairs.
This guide gives those numbers for the two sizes most Indian homes buy. It covers the standard 6 seater dining table size and 4 seater dining table size in cm and feet, round, rectangular and oval shapes, the room size each one needs, and the heights for tables and chairs. Every table we mention has its size taken from its product Specifications, so you can compare like for like.
Quick answer: A standard 6 seater dining table is 150–180 cm long and 90–100 cm wide (about 5–6 ft × 3–3.3 ft). A 4 seater is 120–135 × 75–90 cm (4–4.5 × 2.5–3 ft), or 100–130 cm across if it is round. Both should be 72–76 cm (about 2.5 ft) high. Leave at least 90 cm (3 ft) between the table and the wall on every side where someone sits, so a 180 × 100 cm table needs a room of about 360 × 280 cm (12 × 9 ft).
Dining table dimensions at a glance
Start with the number of people you seat every day, then check the size against your room. The room sizes below allow 90 cm on every side for chairs to pull out.
| Seats | Shape | Table size | In feet | Smallest room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Rectangular | 120–135 × 75–90 cm | 4–4.5 × 2.5–3 ft | 300 × 260 cm (10 × 8.5 ft) |
| 4 | Round or square | 100–130 cm across | 3.3–4.3 ft | 290–310 cm square (9.5–10 ft) |
| 6 | Rectangular or oval | 150–190 × 90–100 cm | 5–6.2 × 3–3.3 ft | 360 × 280 cm (12 × 9 ft) for a 180 cm table |
| 6 | Round | 140–150 cm across | 4.6–5 ft | 330 cm square (11 ft) |
| 8 | Rectangular or oval | 200–240 × 100–120 cm | 6.5–8 × 3.3–4 ft | 400 × 300 cm (13 × 10 ft) for a 215 cm table |
How much table each person needs
Every dining table size comes from one measurement: the space for a single place setting.
- Width per person: 60 cm (2 ft) is the minimum for a plate, glass and elbows. 70 cm feels generous, and suits armchairs.
- Depth per person: about 40 cm for the plate and glass. A table 90–100 cm wide leaves room between the two sides for serving dishes, which matters when you share rice, dal and sabzi from the centre.
- Ends: a table at least 90 cm wide can seat one person at each end.
Worked example: a 180 cm table seats three people a side at 60 cm each, which makes six. If it is 100 cm wide, add one at each end and it seats eight for a festive meal.
6 seater dining table size
The standard 6 seater dining table size is 150–180 cm long and 90–100 cm wide, or about 5–6 ft by 3–3.3 ft. At 150 cm, six people fit only if two sit at the ends. At 180 cm, three fit comfortably along each side and the ends stay free for serving or for two more chairs. If your room allows, choose 180 cm: it is the size most people are glad they picked when the family gathers.
6 seater dining table size in feet
| Length | In feet | How it seats |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm | 5 ft | Two a side and one at each end |
| 165 cm | 5.4 ft | Six, with a little more elbow room |
| 180 cm | 5.9 ft (about 6 ft) | Three a side; eight with the ends |
| 190 cm | 6.2 ft | Three a side in comfort; eight with the ends |
Rectangular 6 seater dining table
A rectangle makes the most of a long, narrow dining area, and it is the easiest shape to push against a wall on weekdays. The Santorini 6 Seater Dining Table is 190 × 100 cm in acacia wood. Its base pairs a solid curved panel at one end with two round pillars at the other, which keeps the long sides clear for chairs.

An oval table seats the same number of people as a rectangle of the same length, but its rounded ends are easier to walk past, so it works in a room where one end is a passage. The Nova 6 Seater Dining Table is 190 × 100 cm, with a long oval top in acacia wood on two split pedestals.

Legs at the corners decide where chairs can go. A pedestal base moves the support to the centre, so you can squeeze in an extra chair for a festive meal without anyone straddling a table leg. A 6 seater dining table with a marble top is cool to the touch, easy to wipe and hard to scratch. It does need a coaster habit: acidic foods such as lemon, tamarind and tomato can dull the polish if left to sit. 4 seater dining table size
The standard 4 seater dining table size is 120–135 × 75–90 cm for a rectangle (about 4–4.5 × 2.5–3 ft), or 100–130 cm across for a round or square table. A rectangle fits against a wall in a small flat. A round table is friendlier for conversation, and nobody gets stuck in a corner.
Round dining table 4 seater
A round dining table of 100–110 cm seats four in a compact space. At 120–130 cm, four people have plenty of room, with space in the centre for serving bowls. All our 4 seater dining tables are round and 130 cm across (4.3 ft).
That size gives about 68 cm of edge per person when six sit down, which is more than the 60 cm minimum. So a 130 cm round table seats four every day and six for a festive meal, especially one with a central base.
The Archie 4 Seater Dining Table is 130 cm across in dark brown acacia wood. Its thick top rests on three solid, round legs, set well in from the edge so they don't get in the way of chairs.

For six people every day, a round table needs to be 140–150 cm across (4.6–5 ft). That size needs a room about 330 cm (11 ft) square, so in most Indian flats a rectangle or oval is the better choice for a 6 seater. If you love the round shape, a 130 cm pedestal table that seats six for festive meals is a good compromise. The Ringo Round Dining Table is 130 cm across in acacia wood, on a fluted pedestal, in warm brown or American walnut.

An 8 seater dining table is usually 200–240 cm long and 100–120 cm wide (6.5–8 × 3.3–4 ft). It needs a room of about 400 × 300 cm (13 × 10 ft). If you host large family dinners often, the extra length is worth the space. The Gaj Dining Table is 215 × 120 × 76 cm in mango wood. Its organic, curved top rests on three fluted pillars, and at that size it seats three a side and one at each end.

The table is only half the measurement. Chairs need room to slide back, and people need room to walk behind them.
- 90 cm (3 ft) from the table edge to a wall or cabinet is the minimum to pull a chair out and sit down.
- 110–120 cm (3.5–4 ft) where people walk behind seated guests, for example on the kitchen side where food is served.
- Measure from the front of furniture, not the wall. A sideboard 40 cm deep behind the chairs takes 40 cm off your clearance.
To find the largest table your room can take, subtract 180 cm (90 cm on each side) from each room measurement. A 330 × 280 cm room fits a table up to 150 × 100 cm. A 370 × 290 cm room fits a 190 × 100 cm table.
| Table | Size | Smallest room | Comfortable room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 4 seater | 130 cm across | 310 × 310 cm (10 × 10 ft) | 350 × 350 cm (11.5 × 11.5 ft) |
| 6 seater | 180 × 100 cm | 360 × 280 cm (12 × 9 ft) | 400 × 320 cm (13 × 10.5 ft) |
| 6 seater | 190 × 100 cm | 370 × 280 cm (12 × 9 ft) | 410 × 320 cm (13.5 × 10.5 ft) |
| 8 seater | 215 × 120 cm | 395 × 300 cm (13 × 10 ft) | 435 × 340 cm (14 × 11 ft) |
Round vs rectangular vs oval dining table
- Round: everyone can see and talk to everyone, and there are no corners to bump into. Best for four in a square room or an open-plan corner. Round tables need a square space.
- Rectangular: uses a long, narrow room best, and can be pushed against a wall on weekdays. The easiest shape for six or more.
- Oval: the capacity of a rectangle with softer corners, so it is easier to walk around in a tight room.
- Square: good for exactly four in a square room, but it seats more people less comfortably than a round table of the same size.
If your family follows Vastu, our dining table direction as per Vastu guide covers which shape traditional guides prefer, where to place the table and which way to face while eating.
Dining table height and chair height
The standard dining table height is 72–76 cm, or about 2.5 ft. All our dining tables are 75 cm high, except the Gaj at 76 cm. What matters more is the gap between the chair seat and the tabletop.
| Measurement | Standard | In feet and inches |
|---|---|---|
| Table height | 72–76 cm | 2 ft 4 in – 2 ft 6 in |
| Chair seat height | 44–48 cm | 17–19 in |
| Gap from seat to tabletop | 28–32 cm | 11–12.5 in |
| Armrest height (armchairs) | Must clear the table's underside | Check before you order |
With a 75 cm table, a 45 cm seat gives the ideal 30 cm gap. If your chairs have arms, measure from the floor to the underside of the tabletop and make sure the arms slide underneath, or the chairs can't be tucked in.
Each of our tables has a matching chair, such as the cane-backed Archie Dining Chair and the upholstered Nova Dining Chair. See them all in dining chairs.
Dining table with a bench
A bench on one long side seats three people on 150–160 cm and tucks fully under the table when not in use, which saves space in a narrow room. Choose a bench about 30 cm shorter than the table, so it fits between the legs. The Santorini Bench is 160 cm long and suits the 190 cm Santorini table.
Rug and light sizes for the dining table
- Rug: choose one that extends 60–75 cm beyond the table on every side, so chair legs stay on the rug when pulled out. For a 180 × 100 cm table, that means a rug of about 300 × 240 cm (10 × 8 ft). For a 130 cm round table, choose a round rug of 250 cm or more, or a 250 cm (8 ft) square.
- Pendant light: hang it 75–90 cm above the tabletop, and choose a width of about half to two-thirds of the table's width. Over a long table, use two or three smaller pendants in a row.
- Mirror: a mirror that reflects the dining table is a traditional Vastu recommendation, and it also doubles the light at dinner. See our mirror placement as per Vastu guide.

Ordering a made-to-order dining table
Our dining tables are made to order by artisans in Jodhpur. According to our shipping page, each piece takes about 40 days to make, followed by 10–15 days for delivery. A table ordered in early October arrives in late November, in time for the wedding season and year-end family dinners.
Because each table is made for you, every one lists customisation in material, dimensions and finish. If your room works out at a size between ours, such as a 160 cm table for a narrow dining area, ask us before you order.
