Ask anyone in an Indian family where the bed should go and you will usually hear the same thing first: never sleep with your head towards the north. That single rule is the start of bed direction as per Vastu, and it shapes how millions of families arrange their bedrooms.
This guide covers the sleeping direction as per Vastu (also called the sleeping position), where to place the bed in the room, which bedroom suits whom, and how the rest of the bedroom furniture fits around it: bedside tables, the wardrobe or chest of drawers, mirrors and colours. We have also added the practical numbers Vastu guides leave out, such as bed sizes and how much space to leave around a bed.
Quick answer: According to Vastu, the best sleeping direction is with your head towards the south, and the east is the next best, especially for students. Almost every guide says to avoid sleeping with your head towards the north. Place the bed with its headboard against a solid south or west wall, not under a beam and not facing a mirror, and keep the space under the bed clear.
The best sleeping direction as per Vastu
In Vastu, "sleeping direction" or sleeping position as per Vastu means the direction your head points when you lie in bed. So "sleep towards the south" means the headboard is on the south side and your feet point north. If you are wondering which direction to sleep in, Vastu guides differ on the details, but they broadly agree on the four directions below.
| Head towards | What most Vastu guides say | Often suggested for |
|---|---|---|
| South | The best direction. Associated with deep sleep, good health and prosperity. | The master bedroom and the head of the family |
| East | Very good. Associated with memory, concentration and waking up refreshed. | Students and children |
| West | Opinions differ. Some guides link it with recognition and success; others with restlessness. | Guest rooms |
| North | Avoided by almost every guide. Linked with disturbed sleep and poor health. | Nobody |
Why is north avoided?
There are two reasons given. Traditionally, a body is laid with its head to the north after death, so it isn't a direction for the living to sleep in. Vastu guides also explain it through the earth's magnetic field, which they say pulls against the body when the head points north. It is the one rule nearly every source agrees on, so if you follow Vastu at all, this is the rule to follow first.
Which direction to sleep scientifically?
People often search for a scientific answer too. Sleep research doesn't give one: there is no strong evidence that any compass direction improves sleep on its own. What the research does support is a dark, quiet, cool room, a comfortable mattress and a regular bedtime. So choose the direction your family's practice prefers, then put your effort into those basics.
Sleeping direction for students, couples and guests
- Students: head towards the east, which Vastu associates with learning and concentration.
- Married couples: head towards the south, ideally in a bedroom in the south-west of the home (more on bedroom location below).
- Guests: head towards the west, which many guides treat as the direction for a guest bedroom.
Bed position according to Vastu
Once you know which way your head should point, the bed position in the room follows. These rules for bed placement as per Vastu come up in most guides:
- Headboard against a solid wall, preferably the south or west wall. Some guides also say not to have a window directly behind your head.
- In the south-west part of the room, if you have a choice. Avoid the north-east corner.
- Not under a beam. A beam over the bed is linked with pressure and restlessness. If you can't move the bed, a false ceiling hides the beam.
- Not in line with the door. Avoid sleeping with your feet or head pointing straight at the bedroom door.
- A small gap from the wall. Some guides suggest leaving a few centimetres between the bed and the wall, rather than pushing it tight against it.
- No mirror facing the bed. This is covered in more detail in our guide to mirror placement as per Vastu.
Bed position as per Vastu for married couples
The master bedroom is traditionally in the south-west of the home, and the bed in the south-west of that room, with the head towards the south. Guides associate this corner with stability, which is why they reserve it for the head of the family. Some guides advise couples against bedrooms in the north-east and south-east.
How much space to leave around the bed
Vastu tells you which wall; these numbers make the room work day to day:
- Sides: leave 60–75 cm (2–2.5 ft) on each side to walk around and make the bed. With 60 cm, a bedside table still fits.
- Foot of the bed: leave at least 75–90 cm (2.5–3 ft) to walk past, or more if a wardrobe opens towards the bed.
- Doors and drawers: make sure wardrobe doors and dresser drawers can open fully without hitting the bed.
Which bed suits a Vastu bedroom
A wooden bed
Vastu guides that mention bed material prefer wood and advise against iron and metal beds. A wooden bed is also the traditional choice in Indian homes because it is sturdy, quiet and easy to refinish.
All our beds are built on acacia or mango wood frames. If your family follows Vastu strictly, check the Specifications on each product page: most designs also list MS steel and MDF. The Aristocrat Bed is the one listed simply as acacia wood. It has a medium-brown acacia frame with an upholstered, gently curved headboard, and measures 208 × 193 × 110 cm.
Aristocrat Non-Storage Bed
208 × 193 × 110 cm. Acacia wood frame with a curved, upholstered headboard; king or queen.

Several Vastu guides ask for the space under the bed to be kept empty, or at least free of clutter, so that energy can flow freely. A bed without storage, raised on legs, makes this easy, and it also lets air circulate and makes it simple to clean under the bed.
The Santorini Bed sits on round bun feet, with a clear gap below the frame. It has an acacia wood frame and a woven cane headboard with rounded corners, and measures 206 × 191 × 110 cm.

King or queen: bed size and room size
Before you choose a direction, check the bed will fit the wall. In India, the most common mattress sizes are 72 × 78 in (183 × 198 cm, about 6 × 6.5 ft) for a king size bed and 60 × 78 in (152 × 198 cm, about 5 × 6.5 ft) for a queen size bed, often called a double bed. Mattresses 75 in long are also common. The bed frame adds roughly 5–15 cm to each measurement, so when you compare a king size or queen size bed frame, measure your wall against the frame's outer size, not the mattress size.
| Bed | Mattress size | Smallest comfortable room | Ideal room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queen (double) | 60 × 78 in (152 × 198 cm) | About 9.5 × 10 ft | 11 × 12 ft or larger |
| King | 72 × 78 in (183 × 198 cm) | About 10.5 × 10 ft | 12 × 12 ft or larger |
The smallest room sizes allow 60 cm on each side and 75 cm at the foot. Add space for a wardrobe or chest of drawers. Our bed size guide covers king, queen, double and single sizes, frame sizes and beds made to fit your mattress.
Most of our beds come in king and queen sizes. The Watson Bed, for example, is listed at 213 × 190 × 110 cm, with a gently arched, upholstered headboard on an acacia wood frame, in warm brown, light oak or black.

Vastu guides that talk about bedside tables favour a matching pair, one on each side, often with a pair of lamps. The symmetry is associated with balance between partners, and it looks calm and finished too. Most of the bedside table orders we receive are for a matching pair, so it is a choice many of our customers make anyway. Keep the tops uncluttered, and move phones, chargers and other electronics away from your head at night. Several guides recommend keeping electronics out of the bedroom altogether.
For height, measure from the floor to the top of your mattress. A bedside table within about 5 cm of that height is easy to reach from bed. The Amalfi Bedside Table is 50 × 40 × 50 cm, in warm brown acacia wood with two drawers and softly rounded edges, which suits lower beds.

Wardrobe and almirah direction as per Vastu
For the wardrobe direction as per Vastu, most guides point to the south-west, south or west walls. The heaviest furniture in the room belongs there, which leaves the north and east sides lighter and more open. The same goes for an almirah, and for the chest of drawers or dresser that holds everyday clothes.
A chest of drawers on the west or south wall, beside or opposite the bed, often works better than a second wardrobe in a smaller bedroom. The Carter Chest of Drawers is listed at 100 × 48 × 105 cm, in mango wood with cane-panelled drawer fronts, and comes with 4 or 6 drawers. Its top is also the right height for a wall mirror above it, as long as that mirror doesn't face the bed.

The main rule is simple: a mirror should not face the bed. For the dressing table direction as per Vastu, most guides suggest the north or east wall, with the mirror out of the bed's line of sight. If a wardrobe mirror has to face the bed, keep it inside the door or cover it at night. Our mirror placement guide covers the rules for every room, along with sizes and hanging heights.
Bedroom colour as per Vastu
Vastu guides recommend light, soft colours for the bedroom and advise against dark red, black and dull grey on the walls. Commonly suggested shades:
- Master bedroom: earthy, warm neutrals such as cream, beige and soft yellow.
- Couples: light pink, peach, rose or lavender.
- Children's rooms: light green or light blue.
Natural wood tones sit well with all of these. A warm brown or light oak bed and bedside tables against cream or beige walls is a combination that suits both Vastu and a calm, modern bedroom.
Bedroom direction as per Vastu
If you are planning a new home or deciding who sleeps where, Vastu guides also assign each part of the house to a different member of the family:
| Bedroom in the | What most Vastu guides say |
|---|---|
| South-west | The best location for the master bedroom and the head of the family. |
| South or west | Good for the master bedroom if the south-west isn't available. West is also suggested for students. |
| North-west | Suggested for guests, newly married couples and grown-up children. |
| East or north | Suggested for children and younger family members. |
| North-east | Usually avoided for bedrooms. Kept for the puja room or left open. |
| South-east | Usually avoided, especially for couples. Linked with arguments and restlessness. If it can't be avoided, guides suggest sleeping with the head towards the south. |
More bedroom Vastu tips
- Electronics: keep the television, laptop and phone away from the bed. If there is a TV in the bedroom, guides suggest the south-east.
- Clutter: clear out broken items and things you don't use, especially under the bed and on top of the wardrobe.
- Lighting: choose soft, warm light over harsh white light, and bedside lamps over a bright ceiling light directly above the bed.
- Photographs: guides advise against photographs of deceased relatives in the bedroom. Family and couple photos are welcome.
- Plants: some guides advise against keeping plants in the bedroom; others accept a small one. This is one of the less settled rules.
- Doors: keep the attached bathroom door closed.

Bedroom Vastu FAQs
Which is the best direction to sleep as per Vastu?
With your head towards the south. Vastu associates it with deep sleep, good health and prosperity. The east is the next best, and is often recommended for students.
Why should we not sleep with our head towards the north?
Traditionally, the head is placed to the north only after death. Vastu guides also say the earth's magnetic field pulls against the body in this position. It is the most widely followed of all the sleeping rules.
Can we sleep with our head towards the west?
Opinions differ. Some Vastu guides link it with success and recognition, while others say it can cause restlessness. Many treat it as acceptable for guest rooms. If you have a choice, south or east is the safer option.
Where should the bed be placed in the master bedroom?
In the south-west part of the room, with the headboard against the south or west wall, so that you sleep with your head towards the south. Keep it out from under beams and out of line with the door.
Is a storage bed bad as per Vastu?
Many Vastu guides prefer the space under the bed to be clear. A bed raised on legs is the simplest way to follow this. If you need a storage bed, keep only bedding in it and nothing broken or unused.
Which direction should a wardrobe face as per Vastu?
Place the wardrobe or almirah against the south-west, south or west wall, so the heaviest furniture sits on those sides of the room.
Which direction should a dressing table face as per Vastu?
Place the dressing table against the north or east wall, so that you face north or east while using it. Make sure its mirror doesn't reflect the bed.
Can a mirror face the bed?
No. Vastu guides link a mirror facing the bed with disturbed sleep. Move it to the north or east wall out of the bed's line of sight, or cover it at night.
What is the size of a king size bed in India?
A king size mattress is usually 72 × 78 in (183 × 198 cm, about 6 × 6.5 ft), and a queen size is 60 × 78 in (152 × 198 cm). The bed frame is slightly larger, so check the dimensions on the product page against your wall.
