Choosing between a king size bed and a queen size bed starts with two numbers: the size of the mattress and the size of the room. Most confusion comes from mixing up the mattress size with the size of the bed frame, which is always a little larger. In many Indian homes a queen bed is also simply called a double bed, which adds to the mix-up.
This guide gives the king size bed size in feet, inches and cm, the queen size bed size in feet, double and single bed sizes, how much bigger a frame is than its mattress, and the room size each bed needs. It also explains how to get a bed made to fit the mattress you already have.
Quick answer: In India, a standard king size mattress is 72 × 78 in (6 × 6.5 ft, 183 × 198 cm) and a queen size mattress is 60 × 78 in (5 × 6.5 ft, 152 × 198 cm). Mattresses 72 and 75 in long are also common, so measure yours. The bed frame is larger: a king frame is typically about 190–198 cm wide and 205–213 cm long. A king bed needs a room of at least about 10.5 × 10 ft, and a queen about 9.5 × 10 ft. Because every Artisan Manor bed is made to order, we can build the frame to your mattress size.
Bed size chart for India
Indian mattresses come in four widths and three common lengths: 72, 75 and 78 inches (6, 6.25 and 6.5 ft). The width decides the name of the bed. The length depends on the mattress brand and how tall you are.
| Bed | Inches | Feet | cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 × 72–78 in | 3 × 6–6.5 ft | 91 × 183–198 cm |
| Double | 48 × 72–78 in | 4 × 6–6.5 ft | 122 × 183–198 cm |
| Queen | 60 × 72–78 in | 5 × 6–6.5 ft | 152 × 183–198 cm |
| King | 72 × 72–78 in | 6 × 6–6.5 ft | 183 × 183–198 cm |
The most common sizes are shown first in each range: 72 × 78 in for a king and 60 × 78 in for a queen. A 72 × 72 in king (6 × 6 ft) is a square bed that suits rooms where length is short.
King size bed size in feet
A standard king size bed size in India is 6 × 6.5 ft (72 × 78 in, 183 × 198 cm) for the mattress. Shorter 6 × 6 ft and 6 × 6.25 ft king mattresses are also sold. With the frame, a king bed is usually about 6.2–6.5 ft wide and 6.7–7 ft long.
For a wide, soft-edged king bed, the Berlin Bed is upholstered all over, headboard and frame, and sits on round wooden bun feet. Its king size is 213 × 198 cm (about 7 × 6.5 ft), one of the largest in our range, and the queen is 198 × 168 cm.

View full detailsDouble bed size in feet
A true double bed size is 4 × 6–6.5 ft (48 × 72–78 in, 122 × 183–198 cm). It fits one adult comfortably, or two people in a guest room used now and then. Be careful when shopping: many sellers in India use "double bed" for any bed that sleeps two, including a queen. Always check the width in inches or cm.
Single bed size in feet
A single bed size is 3 × 6–6.5 ft (36 × 72–78 in, 91 × 183–198 cm). It suits children's rooms, guest rooms and study rooms. Two singles side by side make a 6 ft wide king, which some couples prefer.
Bed frame size vs mattress size
The mattress size tells you which bed to buy. The frame size tells you whether it fits the room. A frame adds width and length because of its side rails, the headboard and, on some designs, a footboard. A thick upholstered headboard or a footboard can add 10–20 cm to the length on its own.
So when you compare a king size bed frame or a queen size bed frame, measure your wall and floor against the frame's outer size, which is the size listed on the product page, not the mattress size. Here is how the two compare across the beds we make:
| Bed | Mattress (W × L) | Frame outer size (W × L) | In feet |
|---|---|---|---|
| King | 183 × 198 cm (72 × 78 in) | 190–198 × 205–213 cm | 6.2–6.5 × 6.7–7 ft |
| Queen | 152 × 198 cm (60 × 78 in) | 160–168 × 190–198 cm | 5.2–5.5 × 6.2–6.5 ft |
For a double or single bed, add roughly the same: about 8–15 cm to the mattress width and length.
Check the frame length against your mattress
Look closely at the queen row. Some of our queen frames are listed at 190–194 cm long, shorter than a 78 in (198 cm) mattress. If your queen mattress is 78 in long, ask us which mattress length the frame takes before you order, or have it built to your mattress. Because every bed is made to order anyway, that adds no time.
Check the wall, not just the floor
Most of our headboards are 110 cm high (Watson's queen is 100 cm). Before you order, stand where the bed will go and check what that height will cover:
- Switchboards and sockets beside the bed, which a wide headboard can block. Plan bedside lamps and phone charging around them.
- A low window sill behind the headboard, which the headboard may partly cover.
- The AC unit and wall lights, so nothing sits directly over the headboard.
Leave 5–10 cm between the headboard and the wall if there are plugs behind it.
A footboard is worth noticing in a tight room, because it fixes the length at the foot of the bed. The Amalfi Bed has upholstered panels set into both its headboard and footboard, framed in warm brown acacia wood. Its king frame is 208 × 193 cm and its queen 193 × 163 cm.

The difference between a king and queen size bed is 12 inches (30 cm) of width. The length is usually the same. That 30 cm matters more than it sounds:
- Space per person: on a king, each of two sleepers gets about 91 cm (36 in), the width of a single mattress. On a queen, each gets about 76 cm (30 in).
- Choose a king if you are a couple who sleep better with room to move, if a child often joins you at night, or if the bedroom is at least 11 ft wide.
- Choose a queen if the room is under about 10.5 ft wide, if you need space for a wardrobe or dressing table beside the bed, or for a guest room.
- Cost and bedding: queen frames, mattresses and sheets cost less, and queen bedding is easier to find in every pattern.
Among our customers, queen and king beds are ordered in close to equal numbers, with the queen slightly ahead. The Bobbin Bed is the bed our customers order most often. It has a cream upholstered headboard with a rounded top, framed in medium brown acacia wood on turned, bobbin-style legs. The king is 211 × 190 cm and the queen 194 × 165 cm.

Leave at least 60 cm (2 ft) on each side of the bed to walk around and make it, and 75 cm (2.5 ft) at the foot. For comfortable everyday use, aim for 75 cm at the sides and 90 cm at the foot. Using our frame sizes, and allowing a few centimetres behind the headboard, that works out to:
| Bed | Smallest room | Comfortable room |
|---|---|---|
| Queen | About 9.5 × 10 ft | 10.5 × 10.5 ft or larger |
| King | About 10.5 × 10 ft | 11.5 × 10.5 ft or larger |
The first number is the wall the headboard stands against. Add space for a wardrobe: about 60 cm for its depth, plus 75 cm in front so the doors open. If you are also choosing which wall the bed goes on, our guide to bed direction as per Vastu covers bed placement and the rest of the bedroom furniture.
Custom size beds: made to fit your mattress
Every Artisan Manor bed is made to order by our artisans in Jodhpur, so the frame doesn't have to be a standard size. If you already own a mattress, we can build the bed to its exact length, width and thickness. That covers sizes like 72 × 75 in, 60 × 72 in or a 66 in wide queen, and older mattresses that don't match today's standard sizes.
A customised bed can also solve room problems. A frame can be made a little shorter for a tight wall, a bed can be built lower or higher to suit how you get in and out, and any design can be made in a different finish. Every bed page lists customisation in material, dimensions and finish.
To order a bed made to your mattress size:
- Measure your mattress length, width and thickness, in inches or cm, at the middle rather than the edges.
- Measure the wall where the headboard will stand and the distance to the foot of the bed.
- Choose the design, then contact us with the measurements before you order.
Custom beds take the same time as every other piece: according to our shipping page, about 40 days to make, then 10–15 days to deliver.
Standard bed height from the floor
Bed height is the floor-to-mattress-top measurement, and it depends on the frame and the mattress together. A standard frame holds the mattress about 30–40 cm off the floor, so with a 15–20 cm mattress the top sits around 50–60 cm. Most adults find 50–60 cm comfortable to sit on and get up from. Low platform beds sit closer to the floor, which makes a room with a low ceiling or a small window feel taller.
The Kiara Bed is our low platform bed, raised on substantial rounded legs under a dark, textured upholstered headboard. Its king size is 213 × 198 cm and its queen 198 × 168 cm.

Before you order: a bed size checklist
- Measure your mattress, or decide on a new one: king 72 in or queen 60 in wide, and 72, 75 or 78 in long.
- Measure the room, and the wall the headboard will stand against.
- Compare the room with the bed's frame size, not the mattress size.
- Check that 60–75 cm remains on each side and 75–90 cm at the foot.
- Allow for the wardrobe doors, the bedroom door swing and any windows behind the headboard.
- If your mattress isn't a standard size, ask us to build the frame to it.
- Plan bedside tables at the same height as the mattress top.
Bed size FAQs
What is the king size bed size in feet?
A standard king size mattress in India is 6 × 6.5 ft (72 × 78 in, 183 × 198 cm), and 6 × 6 ft and 6 × 6.25 ft versions are also common. The bed frame adds a few inches each way, so most king beds are about 6.2–6.5 ft wide and 6.7–7 ft long.
What are the dimensions of a king size bed frame?
For a standard 72 × 78 in mattress, a king bed frame is usually about 190–198 cm wide and 205–213 cm long (6.2–6.5 × 6.7–7 ft). Our headboards are 100–110 cm high. Always check the outer size on the product page, because headboards and footboards vary.
What is the queen size bed size in feet?
A standard queen size mattress is 5 × 6.5 ft (60 × 78 in, 152 × 198 cm), with 5 × 6 ft and 5 × 6.25 ft versions also sold. A queen bed frame is usually about 5.2–5.5 ft wide.
What is the difference between a king and a queen size bed?
A king is 12 inches (30 cm) wider: 72 in against 60 in. The length is usually the same. A king gives each of two sleepers about the width of a single mattress, while a queen fits smaller rooms and costs less.
Is a double bed the same as a queen bed?
Not strictly. A true double bed is 4 ft (48 in) wide, and a queen is 5 ft (60 in) wide. In India, though, many shops call any bed for two a "double bed", so always check the width.
What room size do I need for a king size bed?
At least about 10.5 × 10 ft, which leaves 60 cm on each side and 75 cm at the foot. For a comfortable room with a wardrobe, aim for 11.5 ft or more along the headboard wall.
Can I get a bed made in a custom size?
Yes. Every Artisan Manor bed is made to order, so we can build the frame to your mattress size, or to fit a particular wall. Measure your mattress and contact us before you order.
What is the standard bed height?
Most beds put the top of the mattress 50–60 cm from the floor: a frame of 30–40 cm plus a 15–20 cm mattress. Low platform beds sit lower, and storage beds and thick mattresses sit higher.
