The entrance is the first thing a guest sees and the last thing you see before you leave. In most Indian homes it is also a small, hard-working space: shoes come off here, keys get dropped, and in festive season it carries the toran, the rangoli and the first diyas. A console table for the entrance is the piece that pulls all of that together. It gives you a surface for keys and a lamp, a base for a mirror, and a spot to style for every festival.
This guide covers entrance console table ideas for every kind of foyer, from a narrow passage in a flat to a long wall in a bungalow. It gives the numbers most guides leave out: console table height, depth and length in cm and feet, how much walking space to leave, and what size mirror to hang above it. It then covers how to decorate a console table for everyday use and for Diwali.
Quick answer: A standard console table is 75–80 cm (about 2.5 ft) high and 35–40 cm (14–16 in) deep. In a narrow entrance, go down to 30 cm. Choose a length of about two-thirds of the wall, keep at least 90 cm (3 ft) of clear floor in front of it, and keep it out of the door's swing. Hang a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console, with its bottom edge 15–25 cm above the top. All our console tables are made to order, so an order placed now arrives in late November, in time for the wedding season.
Console table size guide: height, depth and length
A console table is a long, narrow table designed to stand against a wall or behind a sofa. It is shallower than a desk or sideboard, so it adds a surface without taking up much floor space. These are the standard console table dimensions:
| Dimension | Typical range | In feet and inches | What to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height | 70–85 cm | 2 ft 4 in – 2 ft 9 in | 75–80 cm suits most entrances and sits below a standard light switch |
| Depth | 25–45 cm | 10–18 in | 30 cm for narrow passages, 35–40 cm for most foyers, 45 cm where there is plenty of room |
| Length | 90–180 cm | 3–6 ft | About two-thirds of the wall it stands against |
Console table height
The standard console table height is 75–80 cm, or about 2.5 ft. That is close to dining table height, so the top is easy to reach while you are standing. It also sits comfortably below most light switches, which in Indian homes are usually fitted around 120–130 cm from the floor. Check where the switchboard is before you choose a spot: a console table that covers a switch is the most common entrance mistake.
Console table depth: narrow tables for small entrances
Depth decides whether a console works in a passage. At 35–40 cm (14–16 in) there is room for a lamp, a tray and a vase side by side. If the foyer is also the corridor to the living room, a narrow console table of about 30 cm (12 in) leaves more room to walk. Anything shallower than 25 cm holds little more than a key bowl.
Console table length: match it to the wall
A console table looks right when it fills about two-thirds of the wall, with a clear gap on each side. Leave at least 15 cm between the console and a door frame or corner so it doesn't look squeezed in. Measure the wall first, then use this table:
| Wall width | Console length | From our range |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 cm (5 ft) | 90–100 cm (3–3.3 ft) | Wiggle (100 cm) |
| 150–200 cm (5–6.5 ft) | 100–130 cm (3.3–4.3 ft) | Chess (108 cm), Gola and Pillar (120 cm) |
| 200–250 cm (6.5–8 ft) | 130–165 cm (4.3–5.4 ft) | Santorini, Waterfall and Slat (130 cm), Bow (135 cm) |
| 250 cm and above (8 ft+) | 165 cm and above (5.4 ft+) | Dumroo (170 cm) |
Leave room to walk: clearances at the entrance
An entrance console table has to share the space with people coming in, taking off shoes and carrying shopping bags. These three measurements keep it from getting in the way:
- Walkway: keep at least 90 cm (3 ft) of clear floor in front of the console. Where people stop to take off shoes, 100–120 cm is more comfortable.
- Door swing: open the main door fully and mark where its edge sweeps. The console must stand outside that arc. A main door is usually 90–105 cm wide, so the arc is about the same.
- Shoe zone: if shoes come off at the door, keep the console on the other side of the foyer or at the far end, so the table doesn't become a shoe rack.
Entrance console table ideas for every kind of foyer
These ideas are sorted by the kind of entrance you have and the look you want. Every size below comes from the product's Specifications.
Narrow console table for a small entrance
In a flat, the foyer is often just the first metre of a passage. The Bow Console Table is our slimmest at 30 cm (12 in) deep, and 135 cm long. It has a white Banswara marble top on a slim steel frame in matt gold, so it looks light and leaves the floor visible underneath. That also makes the passage feel wider.

A marble top is the classic choice for an entrance: it wipes clean, it doesn't mind a brass lamp or a hot diya plate, and it catches the light. The Gola Console Table is 120 × 40 × 75 cm, with a Botticino marble top on slender, tapered acacia wood legs. At 120 cm it suits a wall of about 180 cm (6 ft).

Console table with mirror: getting the proportions right
A mirror above a console table is the classic foyer pairing. It gives you a last look before you leave, bounces light into a dark entrance and makes a small foyer feel larger. Two numbers make the pair look like one arrangement:
- Width: choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console. On a 120 cm console, that is 80–90 cm.
- Height: hang the mirror with its bottom edge 15–25 cm (6–10 in) above the tabletop. Any higher, and the mirror and table look like two separate pieces.
A tall, upright mirror can be a little narrower, around half to two-thirds of the console width, because its height carries the look.
| Console length | Mirror width | Bottom edge of the mirror, from the floor |
|---|---|---|
| 100 cm (3.3 ft) | 65–75 cm | 90–100 cm, on a 75 cm table |
| 120 cm (3.9 ft) | 80–90 cm | 90–100 cm, on a 75 cm table |
| 130–135 cm (4.3–4.4 ft) | 85–100 cm | 90–105 cm, on a 75–80 cm table |
| 170 cm (5.6 ft) | 110–130 cm, or two mirrors side by side | 90–100 cm, on a 75 cm table |

Entrance console and mirror as per Vastu
If you follow Vastu, the most common guidance for the entrance is not to hang a mirror directly facing the main door. A mirror on a side wall of the foyer, ideally the north or east wall, is considered the better position. That works well with a console: place the console on the side wall and the mirror above it. Our mirror placement as per Vastu guide covers every room in detail.
Console table for the living room: behind the sofa or against a wall
A console table for the living room does two jobs. Against a wall, it is a place for lamps, books and photos, and the same size rules apply as at the entrance. Behind a sofa that floats in the middle of the room, it gives the back of the sofa a finished look and holds lamps for reading.
- Length: no longer than the sofa. About two-thirds to the full length of the sofa looks best.
- Height: at or just below the height of the sofa back. Most sofa backs are 80–90 cm, so a 75–80 cm console suits most.
- Gap: leave 5–10 cm between the sofa and the console, so the sofa doesn't push against it.
For a three-seater sofa of about 210 cm, a 130–135 cm console such as the Santorini or Bow fits comfortably behind it.
How to decorate a console table
Most good foyer decor ideas come down to a few simple rules. Start with the pieces you use every day, then add the decorative ones:
- A lamp or a light source at one end. A table lamp, a brass diya stand or a lantern gives the entrance a warm glow in the evening.
- A tray or bowl for keys, so they don't scatter across the top.
- Something tall and something low: a vase with branches or dried grass, beside a short stack of books. Uneven heights look more natural than a row of objects of the same size.
- Odd numbers: group things in threes rather than pairs.
- Leave space: keep about a third of the tabletop clear. A crowded console looks like clutter at the door.
- Use the floor: baskets, a pouf or a low stool underneath fill the space and add storage.
Diwali entrance decoration: dressing the console for the festival
For Diwali, the console becomes part of the main door decoration. Keep the everyday pieces, and add a festive layer:
- Toran above the main door, and shubh-labh or a pair of footprints on either side. Keep the torans high enough that they won't brush the lamps on the console.
- An urli on the console: a shallow brass bowl with water, marigold and rose petals and a few floating diyas. For a 40 cm deep console, an urli of about 25–30 cm fits with room to spare.
- A pair of brass diyas or a tall lamp at one end. In front of a mirror, their light doubles.
- A rangoli at the threshold, placed so guests step past it rather than onto it.
Protect the top: set diyas and the urli on a brass tray or a thick mat. Oil and hot wax can mark wood, and stones such as marble and travertine can absorb oil. Keep open flames at least 30 cm from torans, curtains and flowers. For cleaning after the festival, see our care instructions. For more ideas, see our guide to Diwali decoration ideas for home.
Ordering a made-to-order console table
All the console tables in this guide are made to order by artisans in Jodhpur. According to our shipping page, each piece takes about 40 days to make, followed by 10–15 days for delivery. An order placed in early October arrives in late November, too late for Diwali on 8 November but in time for the wedding season and Christmas and New Year gatherings. For Diwali this year, the styling ideas above work with the console table you already have.
Because each piece is made for you, every console lists customisation in material, dimensions and finish. If your wall calls for a length that isn't in the range, ask us before you order.
Checklist before you order an entrance console table
- Measure the wall, and choose a console about two-thirds of its width.
- Open the main door fully and mark its swing. Keep the console outside that arc.
- Check that at least 90 cm (3 ft) of floor stays clear in front of it.
- Choose the depth: 30 cm for a passage, 35–40 cm for most foyers.
- Check where the light switches and sockets are, so the console doesn't cover a switch and a lamp can reach a socket.
- Decide whether you need drawers for keys and papers.
- Plan the mirror: two-thirds to three-quarters of the console's width, hung 15–25 cm above it.
- Allow about 7–8 weeks for a made-to-order piece to reach you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a console table?
A console table is a long, narrow table that stands against a wall or behind a sofa. It is usually 30–40 cm deep, so it adds a surface for lamps, keys and decor without taking up much floor space. It is most often used at the entrance, in a hallway or in the living room.
What is the standard size of a console table?
A standard console table is 75–80 cm high, 35–40 cm deep and 90–180 cm long. In feet, that is about 2.5 ft high, 1.2–1.3 ft deep and 3–6 ft long. Choose the length to match your wall, at about two-thirds of its width.
What is the height of a console table in feet?
Most console tables are about 2.5 ft high (75 cm), and some are closer to 2 ft 7 in (80 cm). Behind a sofa, the console should be at or just below the sofa back.
How deep should an entrance console table be?
For most entrances, 35–40 cm (14–16 in) gives room for a lamp and a tray. In a narrow foyer or passage, choose about 30 cm (12 in), and keep at least 90 cm of clear floor in front of it.
What size mirror goes above a console table?
Choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console. For a 100 cm console, that is 65–75 cm. Hang it with the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the tabletop.
Where should a console table be placed in the entrance?
Place it on a wall that the door does not swing towards, with at least 90 cm of walking space in front of it. If you follow Vastu, a side wall is also the usual position for a mirror at the entrance, rather than the wall facing the main door.
How do I decorate a console table for Diwali?
Add an urli with flowers and floating diyas, a pair of brass diyas or a lamp, and a toran above the door. Set anything with oil or water on a tray to protect the top, and keep flames away from torans and flowers.
