Side Table for Living Room: Height, Size and Placement Guide

A good side table for the living room sits where your hand falls when you sit down, at a height you can reach without leaning over the sofa arm. It holds your tea, your phone and perhaps a lamp. Most side tables that feel "wrong" are not ugly. They are simply a few centimetres too high, too low or too far away.

This guide covers the right side table height for your sofa, standard side table sizes in cm and inches, how to use a corner table beside an L-shaped sofa, and how to choose between round, square, wooden and marble designs. Some people call it an end table or a sofa side table. The rules are the same.

Quick answer: Keep the tabletop level with your sofa arm, or up to 5 cm lower. Never go higher. For most sofas that means a table 45–55 cm (18–22 in) high. A top of 40–45 cm (16–18 in) holds a cup, a phone and a book. Go up to 50–60 cm if the table needs to hold a lamp or fill the corner of an L-shaped sofa. Place it within about 10 cm of the sofa arm, with its front edge in line with the front of the seat.

Side table height: match it to the sofa arm

Measure from the floor to the top of your sofa's armrest. That one number decides the height. A side table at the same height as the arm, or slightly lower, lets you put a cup down without lifting your elbow. A table taller than the arm feels awkward to reach and makes the sofa look sunk into the room.

Low, deep lounge sofas often have arms of 50–55 cm. More upright sofas and armchairs can reach 60–65 cm. Use this table to find your range:

Sofa arm height Side table height Side tables at this height
Below 50 cm (low or armless) 40–45 cm (16–18 in) Anya (40 cm), Rome and Santorini (42 cm), Levels, Drop and Pietra (45 cm)
50–55 cm 45–50 cm (18–20 in) Most of the range at 50 cm, including Maharani, Sara, Medallion, Ribu and Aurelius
55–60 cm 50–55 cm (20–22 in) Bobbin and Scarlett (55 cm)
60–65 cm 55–60 cm (22–24 in) Barrel (60 cm), or a custom height

For a low lounge sofa, the Levels Side Table is 45 cm high with a 34 cm hexagonal top. It is made of stacked, offset acacia wood layers, in black or warm brown.

Side table size: how big should the top be?

Height matters most, but the top has to hold what you use every day. Measure the gap beside the sofa as well as the arm height. A side table that is wider than the gap will push into the walkway or the curtains.

Top size What it holds Where it works
30–35 cm (12–14 in) A cup and a phone Tight gaps between a sofa and a wall or window
40–45 cm (16–18 in) A cup, a phone, a book and a small vase Beside most sofas and armchairs; the standard size
50–60 cm (20–24 in) A table lamp plus a cup and a book Sofa corners, L-shaped sofas, between two armchairs

Leave at least 75 cm of clear floor where people walk past. If the table sits next to a door or a balcony opening, check the swing of the door before you choose the top size.

Small side table for a living room

In a small living room or a narrow gap, choose a slim stem rather than a solid block. You see more floor, so the room feels less crowded. The Anya Side Table is the smallest in the range at 32 × 32 × 40 cm. It has a round marble top and base joined by a thin black steel stem, in green, black or beige travertine marble.

Where to place a side table in the living room

Place the side table within about 5–10 cm of the sofa arm, with its front edge roughly in line with the front of the seat cushion. If it sits too far back, you have to twist to reach it. If it sits too far forward, you knock it with your knees when you stand up.

  • One or two? On a three-seater sofa, one side table is usually enough if a coffee table is within reach of the other end. Use two if the room is symmetrical or both ends of the sofa get used every evening.
  • Beside an armchair: every armchair needs somewhere to put a cup down. If there is no coffee table nearby, give each chair its own side table.
  • Between two armchairs: one table with a larger top, 45–55 cm, can serve both chairs.

If you are planning the whole seating area, our coffee table buying guide covers the centre table in front of the sofa.

Corner table for the living room

Where two sofas meet at a right angle, or at the corner of an L-shaped sofa, there is often a square of space that nobody can sit in. A corner table fills it and gives both seats somewhere to put things down. Measure the empty square and choose a square top that fills most of it: usually 50–60 cm.

A corner is also the best place for a lamp. The Pillar Side Table has the largest top in the range at 55 × 55 cm, 50 cm high, with a beige travertine top resting on two solid acacia wood slabs.

Lamp table: getting the height right

If the side table will hold a lamp, think about the table and the lamp together. When you are seated, the bottom of the lampshade should sit roughly at eye level, about 95–105 cm from the floor. On a 50 cm table, that means a lamp of about 45–55 cm. Choose a top at least 10 cm wider than the lamp's base, so there is still room for a cup.

Round, square or drum: choosing a side table shape

The shape changes how easy the table is to walk around and how much it holds.

Round side table

A round side table has no corners to catch a knee or a passing hip, which makes it the safest choice beside a walkway. It also softens a sofa with straight lines. The Maharani Side Table has a 40 cm round top on a turned acacia wood pedestal, 50 cm high, in warm brown or black.

Square side table

A square side table sits flush against a sofa arm and a wall, so it uses a corner or a narrow gap well. It gives you the most usable surface for its size. The Sara Side Table is a 45 × 45 × 50 cm cube of vertically fluted mango wood with a white marble top.

Wooden, marble or travertine: choosing a material

Wooden side table

A wooden side table is warm, quiet when you put a cup down, and easy to live with every day. Use coasters, wipe spills promptly and keep it out of strong direct sunlight to protect the finish. Our wooden side tables are acacia or mango wood: for example Levels, Bobbin, Maharani, the carved Tribal Side Table and the solid Santorini Side Table.

Marble side table

A marble side table feels cool and heavy, and every top has its own veining. Marble is natural stone, so use coasters under glasses and wipe up tea, lemon and oil quickly to avoid marks. The Ribu Side Table is made entirely of Toronto marble: a fluted pedestal under a softly squared 45 cm top, 50 cm high. It also comes in white marble.

Travertine side table

Travertine is a warm, beige stone with small natural pits on its surface. It suits rooms with wood, cane and linen. The Pietra Side Table uses it differently: a 40 cm round acacia wood top balances on a rounded travertine base, 45 cm high. For a travertine top, see Pillar, Rome or Tri.

Side table sets and nesting tables

A pair of side tables at two heights gives you more surface when guests arrive and takes up less floor than two separate tables. The Dimple Side Tables are two acacia wood drums, 40 × 40 × 50 cm and 35 × 35 × 45 cm, shaped so the smaller one tucks into a curve in the larger one.

If you want tables that slide fully under one another in front of the sofa, see the nesting Bean Coffee Table Set.

Side table with storage or a shelf

If remotes, coasters and magazines tend to pile up on the side table, choose one with a lower shelf or a drawer. A lower shelf keeps the top clear for a cup and a lamp.

The Aurelius Side Table is 42 × 42 × 50 cm, with a round fluted glass top and a dark Emperador marble shelf in a slim gold steel frame. The Carrie Side Table has a cane shelf under a round Botticino marble top, and the Halle Dark Side Table has a woven paper cord shelf under a dark Emperador marble top.

For a drawer, the Carter 1 Drawer Side Table has a cane-fronted drawer on curved sheesham wood legs. At 70 cm high, it is taller than most sofa arms, so it works best as a lamp table against a wall or in a corner.

Side table decor: how to style it

A side table is a working surface first, so keep at least a third of the top clear for a cup. Then add no more than three things:

  • Something tall: a lamp, a bud vase or a few stems.
  • Something flat: a coaster, a small tray or a stack of two books.
  • Something personal: a small brass piece, a candle or a framed photo.

For festive evenings, put diyas and candles on a metal or stone tray rather than directly on wood, and keep them well away from lampshades and curtains. Our Diwali living room guide has more ideas for styling the furniture you already own.

Ordering, delivery and custom sizes

All our side tables are made to order by artisans in Jodhpur. According to our shipping page, each piece takes about 40 days to make, followed by 10–15 days for delivery. An order placed in mid-October arrives in late November or early December, in time for the wedding season and year-end gatherings.

Every side table in this guide lists customisation in material, dimensions and finish. If your sofa arm is taller than 65 cm, or the gap beside it calls for a size we don't list, ask us before you order.

Side table FAQs

What is the standard height of a side table?

Most side tables are 45–60 cm (18–24 in) high, and 50 cm is the most common height. The right height for you is your sofa arm height or up to 5 cm lower.

What size side table do I need for my living room?

A top of 40–45 cm (16–18 in) suits most sofas and armchairs. Go down to 30–35 cm for a tight gap, and up to 50–60 cm if the table needs to hold a lamp or fill a sofa corner.

Should a side table be higher or lower than the sofa arm?

Level with the arm or slightly lower, by up to 5 cm. A table higher than the arm is awkward to reach from a seated position and makes the sofa look lower than it is.

What is the difference between a side table and an end table?

There is no real difference. "End table" is common in the US for a table at the end of a sofa, while "side table" is the more common term in India and the UK. The sizing advice is the same.

What size corner table suits an L-shaped sofa?

Measure the empty square where the two sides of the sofa meet and choose a square top that fills most of it, usually 50–60 cm. Keep it at arm height or slightly lower so both seats can reach it.

Should the side table match the coffee table?

No. It looks better when one thing connects them, such as the same wood tone, the same stone or a similar shape. Exactly matching sets can make a living room look like a showroom.

Is a marble side table practical for daily use?

Yes, if you use coasters and wipe spills quickly. Marble and travertine can mark with acidic drinks such as lemon water. If you want something low-maintenance, choose a wooden side table or one with a wooden top.

Can I use a living room side table beside the bed?

Sometimes. A bedside table should be level with the top of your mattress, which is often 55–65 cm, so many 50 cm side tables are too low. Our bedside table guide covers the right height for your bed, or browse our bedside tables sized for the bedroom.
